The art of protocol

Beyond good manners

In a world where first impressions matter more than ever, protocol and etiquette become essential tools to convey respect, courtesy, and professionalism. Beyond mere formalities, these rules establish a framework of behavior that facilitates social and professional interactions, avoiding misunderstandings and promoting a harmonious environment.

Why is protocol important?

Protocol is not exclusive to diplomatic events or state ceremonies; its application extends to corporate meetings, social events, and everyday encounters. According to the Business and Management School, protocol in events is essential for everything to proceed in an orderly manner and for the established objectives to be met. It sets clear rules that help avoid conflicts and convey the meaning and importance of the event.

Table etiquette: a reflection of politeness

One of the most visible aspects of protocol is table etiquette. Knowing how to place and use utensils, the arrangement of plates and glasses, and the proper use of the napkin are details that show consideration for fellow diners. For example, the napkin should be placed on the lap upon sitting and used to gently wipe the lips before drinking, avoiding leaving marks on the glassware.

Preparing a table for an event: details that make a difference

Table presentation at a formal event requires attention to several elements:
  • Tablecloth and charger plate: A clean, well-ironed tablecloth is essential. The charger plate is placed as a base for the subsequent plates.
  • Cutlery: They are arranged from the outside to the inside, according to the order of use. Forks to the left and knives and spoons to the right of the plate.
  • Glassware: The glasses are placed on the upper right side of the plate, ordered from left to right according to use: water, red wine and white wine.
  • Bread plate: It is placed on the upper left side of the main course, accompanied by a butter knife if necessary.
These details not only beautify the table, but also facilitate the service and comfort of the guests.

Protocol and etiquette are more than just a set of rules; they are expressions of respect and consideration for others. At The Time Parlor, we understand the importance of these details and offer personalized advice to ensure that every event reflects the elegance and professionalism our clients deserve.
